Is it me or did anyone else notice how fast February flew by? Well, Today is the first day in March and I am confident that this month is going to be filled with positive accomplishments.
One of the universal girl problems is the issue of Foundation mismatch. I mean, we can all relate. We all hear stuff like "I cant seem to find my shade", "I look washed out", "this foundation is too light/dark" ; and the list goes on of all the endless complaints we hear about finding the perfect foundation match. In this post, I will try to explain the best way I can, on how to find your "Perfect Match"!

What is Foundation?
As Foundation can either make or mar the entire makeup, it is very important that we understand what Foundation really is and what its uses are. A Foundation is a skin coloured makeup that is applied to the face (and even other body parts), to help cover up minor blemishes and to create a uniform, flawless finish to the complexion.
Foundation can come in Liquid, Cream, Mousse or even Powder form. Foundation can be Oil based, Oil free or Water based. Your selection as to the type of foundation to go for, is largely based on your skin type or personal preference. However, regardless of the type or form of Foundation chosen, the same rules still apply as to how to get your Perfect Match...

Best Foundation For Skin Type
- Oily Skin - To ditch the shine, use Oil free (Matte) formula's with medium coverage.
- Dry Skin - To hydrate your skin, Water/Liquid based Foundation with light coverage.
- Normal Skin - If you have normal skin, the level of coverage is of personal preference. Matte or Luminous, it all depends on you.
- Acne Prone Skin - If your major concern is acne, using a cream formula with medium to full coverage, will suffice.
- Ageing Skin - Heavy products can settle into fine lines and wrinkles, so opt for a light coverage liquid Foundation.

How do I pick the right shade for me?
Before you choose any foundation, you first need to know about "Undertone" and "Shade". Undertone is the true colour of your skin tone. Learn it and Love it, because it never changes. You might get lighter or darker over time, but your undertone remains the same. Undertone determines the amount of yellow or red (warm or cool) in a Foundation, While Shade determines how light or how deep the colour of the Foundation is.
The main mistake people make in choosing the wrong Foundation, is because many people select their Foundation based on their "Overtone". Overtone also known as "Surface tone". Overtone is very commonly found in the face, and many people assume that because of the redness on the surface of their skin, which might be due to acne or rosacea, that they have cool undertones and they might be wrong. In fact, knowing your Undertone in my opinion, is the most important factor in choosing the right Foundation shade.

I will do a full post on Undertones sometime soon, as Undertones isn't only in respect to makeup. It goes way beyond makeup. Undertone even influences the colours of clothing, jewelry, etc, that best enhances your skin tone. You find out that you look great in some colours better than others.
The easiest way to find out your undertone is to look at your wrist and your arms.
- If the veins in your wrist appear more blue/purple; then you are probably a cool undertone. So the Foundation of choice, regardless of your preferred type, should be those with red undertones.
- If your veins appear more green, then you have more of a golden/yellow warm undertone.
- If you cant tell either way, then you are likely a neutral undertone, you have equal parts of warm and cool.

- Don't try to change your undertones with foundation. If you want to add more cool tones to your face to reduce the yellow on your face, use blush. Alternatively, if you want more warmth, add bronzer.
- Your Foundation is meant to erase discolourations in the skin and create a flawless canvas. If your Foundation does not blend seamlessly into your neck, then you are probably wearing a wrong shade.
- Application is everything. If you're using your fingers, sponge or brush, ensure you blend the Foundation properly until it sinks into the skin.
