Cape Crusade...

Hello Everyone,

I'm sure you have noticed the "Cape Trend" by now. Capes are all the rage right now, and they are also a personal favourite of mine, as they accentuate any plain or otherwise boring outfit. Whether you choose to use your Cape as a fashion statement or an alternative to the regular "cover up" for the conservative sisters, the possibilities to styling a Cape are endless!

What is a Cape?

By definition, A Cape is a short, sleeveless (without sleeves of any kind) outer garment which drapes the wearers back, arms and chest areas, and it is usually fastened at the neck (although there are some that do not require any type of fastening).

N.B: Capes are usually shorter in length, however; the longer/full length versions are called "Cloaks". Although most times, they are used interchangeably.

Types of Capes:

Capes come in these versions:
• Cape (As separates)
• Cape Tops (A top and a cape in one)
• Cape Dress (A Cape and a dress in one)
• Cloak (Longer/Full length version of a cape)

Ways To Wear/Style A Cape:

Capes are very versatile and can be styled in multiple ways, depending on the type of fabric, style, and the function you are wearing the Cape for. So here are a few tips on how, where and when to wear a Cape!

Weddings: Weddings are a great place to wear your Capes to. A lot of brides are now ditching the traditional veils and substituting it with the Cape/Cloak dress on their special day.
A Cape also makes a great fashionable cover up, that is suitable for the bridal train for religious ceremonies, where it is required to be conservative albeit stylish!

• Evening/Occasion Wear: We are getting to see a lot of evening and occasion wear with Capes/Cloaks attached. Capes can also be worn over an evening wear, as "the pop" of the outfit.
For evening wear, its best for the Cape to be made out of lighter fabrics like Chiffon and Silks. Add chandelier earrings, and you will be the belle of the ball!

Daywear/Casual Wear: Capes can be worn as a top ( Cape Top ), or a Cape Can be worn over a camisole, vest, t.shirt or a crop top. Capes can be worn with a pair of skinny jeans or high waisted pencil skirt. Add a statement neckpiece, handbag, pair of wedges, and you're off to brunch with the ladies, or a lunch date with your crush!

Weather Wear: The Knitted or blanket like version of a cape is popularly referred to as a "Poncho". A "Poncho" can be comfy yet chic, and its more appropriate for the cold season. Wear with skinny jeans and a pair of boots, and you are good to go!

• Traditional Wear: Many ladies are now wearing their traditional outfits made with fabrics like Ankara, Kente, Guipure Lace, etc; and teeming it up with Capes! It is so refreshing to see that Capes can be styled even with traditional outfits too!
Capes can be worn with your traditional outfits to Weddings, Birthday Celebrations, Funerals, etc.

Whatever way you choose to style your Cape, remember to look fabulous!
